Grief Engulfs Ford Field: Former Lions DE Passes Away at Age 35, Leaving Unbearable Pain for Detroit Fans - The Super Bowl Dream That Never Came True with Lions Can Never Be Realized

Posted Apr 29, 2026

A profound sadness is engulfing Ford Field after the official confirmation that former Detroit Lions defensive end Josh Mauro has passed away at the age of 35.

Mauro passed away on April 23, leaving a huge void in the hearts of Lions fans and the broader NFL community.

His family shared an emotional statement on social media, saying Josh took his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven.

Mauro joined the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2014. Despite giving his all throughout training camp and preseason games, he was cut before the regular season began and was only kept on the practice squad for a short time.

Although Mauro’s time wearing a Lions uniform was quite short, he is still deeply loved by many Detroit fans who always remember his NFL journey.

After leaving Detroit, Mauro joined the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent the majority of his career across six impressive seasons. He also played for the New York Giants in 2018 and the Oakland Raiders in 2019 before returning to the Cardinals for the final chapter of his career.

In a total of 80 NFL games, Mauro recorded 130 tackles and 5 sacks, performing consistently as a defensive end.

The 2016 season was the pinnacle of his career, when he started 13 games for the Cardinals and set a personal record with 32 tackles.

Lions fans are still grieving the Super Bowl dream that never became reality — the dream of seeing Mauro help the Honolulu blue and silver team win a championship.

Today, Ford Field is immersed in sorrow as fans and team leadership come together to recall emotional memories of the former Lions player.

Many former teammates and coaches have sent sincere condolences to Mauro’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

Mauro was known as a hardworking, blue-collar player who always gave everything he had, even though he was not a big star in the league.

A Stanford graduate, he brought professionalism and relentless determination throughout his 8 NFL seasons.

Despite battling numerous injuries and hardships, Mauro maintained his full passion for football until his final moments.

The entire NFL community has united to send warm tributes to the talented former defensive end.

In Detroit, although he only wore the Lions uniform for a short time, Mauro still holds a special place in the hearts of the fans.

Even though the Super Bowl dream with the Lions never came true, it will forever remain an inspiration for the next generation of players.

Mauro’s sudden death is a profound reminder of the fragility of life and the value of every single moment on the football field.

Josh Mauro leaves behind a lasting legacy — the image of a quiet warrior with an indomitable spirit — in the hearts of all football fans.

He will forever be remembered by Lions fans, Cardinals fans, and the entire NFL with the deepest respect and sincerest gratitude.

Superstar Amon-Ra St. Brown Moves Fans After Expressing Willingness to Take a Pay Cut to Help Detroit Lions Add New Contracts – And the Leadership’s Response Warms the Hearts of Detroit Fans
Detroit, Michigan – Amon-Ra St. Brown, wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, touched the hearts of the entire team and fans when he publicly expressed his willingness to take a pay cut to help the team strengthen its roster amidst financial constraints. With the Lions being cautious with their cap space in the current free agency period, St. Brown’s selfless act reflects his deep commitment and love for the team. "I understand that we're in a tight financial spot, but I want to do everything I can to help this team get better. If taking a pay cut helps us bring in more players and get closer to our goal of competing for the NFC Championship, I’m all for it. I love the Lions, I love my teammates, and I want to see us succeed,” St. Brown shared in an emotional interview, which resonated with both the team and the fanbase. St. Brown’s statement quickly garnered attention from Detroit Lions fans, who have long admired his work ethic and commitment to the team. His words highlighted not only his determination on the field but also his sense of responsibility towards the team’s collective success. However, after hearing St. Brown’s request, the Lions management made a decision that further solidified their bond with their star receiver. While they deeply appreciate St. Brown’s willingness to sacrifice for the team, the Lions decided not to restructure his contract, aiming to preserve long-term financial stability and honor the terms of the current deal. Lions General Manager Brad Holmes said: “We deeply respect Amon-Ra’s commitment and sacrifice. He is a key part of our team, and his leadership is invaluable. However, we need to stay within our financial structure to ensure the continued growth and stability of the team in the long run.” Although they couldn’t accommodate St. Brown’s request, the Lions management reaffirmed their dedication to supporting him and ensuring the team has the resources to compete for championships. The decision reinforced the club's values of loyalty and unity. This response not only warmed the hearts of Lions fans but also underscored the team’s commitment to maintaining strong principles of family and togetherness. Amon-Ra St. Brown continues to be a symbol of passion and selflessness for Detroit fans. This situation shows that, beyond talent on the field, the values of spirit and sacrifice are crucial to a team’s success. Amon-Ra St. Brown and the Detroit Lions continue their journey toward achieving greatness.
