49ers Finalizing Deal with 1,000-Yard RB for Christian McCaffrey Insurance as Brian Robinson Jr. Departs San Francisco

Posted Mar 26, 2026

San Francisco, CA – March 25, 2026. The San Francisco 49ers are finalizing a deal to sign running back Najee Harris, who has surpassed 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons.

“They said I had an Achilles injury and they didn’t want to sign me. But the 49ers opened their doors wide to bring me to San Francisco, showing that they really value and trust me. Even if I’m a backup, I still want to prove my contributions to bring glory to the Niners.” – Najee Harris said when signing with the 49ers.

This is a strategic move by the 49ers to protect Christian McCaffrey, who is about to turn 30. The team aims to reduce McCaffrey’s workload in the upcoming season.

Harris will be an ideal backup for McCaffrey, especially since Brian Robinson Jr. left San Francisco to join the Atlanta Falcons.

In his first four seasons in the NFL, Harris rushed for over 1,000 yards each season and was a key player for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense.

Although Harris dealt with an Achilles injury last season, he still showed his ability and potential. He will be an important addition to the team.

The 49ers not only need a backup running back but also want a player who can contribute immediately and add depth to their offensive game plan.

Harris has had impressive numbers with the Steelers, rushing for over 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons. He is also a capable receiver and a strong special teams player.

“I know people have doubts about my abilities after the injury, but that won’t stop me. I’ve always wanted to prove my worth.” Harris continued to share.

With McCaffrey approaching 30 and having an injury history, adding a quality backup like Harris is crucial to preserving McCaffrey’s career and performance throughout the season.

Harris can share the workload with McCaffrey and refresh the 49ers’ offensive game plan, giving the team more flexibility and depth on offense.

Harris is not only strong with the ball in hand but also a threat in the receiving game. He is an all-around option for the 49ers.

Since joining the Steelers, Harris has become one of the most highly regarded running backs in the NFL. He hopes to continue performing at his best in a 49ers uniform.

McCaffrey, despite his excellence, cannot do everything in a season. Having a player like Harris will help the 49ers maintain a steady level of performance throughout the season.

Although Harris may not be the starting player, he will have the opportunity to make significant contributions for the 49ers and prove his worth on the field.

“I’ve always believed I could do more, and the 49ers believe in me. This is my chance to prove myself and help the team win.” Harris added.

Harris does not only want to play a backup role, but he is also ready to contribute in all situations and help the team achieve success in the future.

Signing Harris will help ease McCaffrey’s workload while also adding depth and flexibility to the 49ers’ offensive attack.

“Whether I’m a backup or not, I’ll always give my all and contribute to the 49ers. That’s my commitment.” Harris concluded regarding his future with the 49ers.

With the addition of Harris, the 49ers will have a stronger, more flexible offensive lineup, with multiple attacking options ready to compete for titles.

RB Who Won 2 National Championships Leaves 49ers After Worst Season of His Career - Joins Atlanta Falcons, Playing Next to Bijan Robinson Instead of Christian McCaffrey to Achieve 1,000 Yards Goal
The San Francisco 49ers have parted ways with one of their running backs as Brian Robinson Jr. officially signed a contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Robinson Jr. joined the 49ers ahead of the 2025 season in a trade with the Washington Commanders. However, his season in San Francisco didn’t go as expected. While the team had a successful season overall, Robinson Jr. was unable to perform at his best. He only had 92 carries for 400 yards and 2 touchdowns, all career lows. With Christian McCaffrey as the starting running back for the 49ers, Robinson Jr. didn’t have many opportunities to showcase his skills on the field. His season in San Francisco is considered the biggest failure of his career. Despite having chances to play, he couldn’t make a significant impact. “I went through a forgettable season in San Francisco, it was the worst season of my career. I had a great time and was happy with the 49ers, but I have to move on to fulfill my career goals. Thank you to the fans, thank you for everything.” Robinson Jr. shared. Robinson Jr. was a star at Alabama, winning 2 national championships and earning First-Team All-SEC honors. He was expected to shine when entering the NFL. However, injuries during his rookie season held him back from reaching his potential. The former Washington Commanders player struggled in the first few seasons. Despite this, Robinson Jr. had his best season in 2024 with 799 yards and 8 touchdowns, his highest numbers in his career. After a season as a backup to Christian McCaffrey, Robinson Jr. signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Falcons on March 24, 2026. The Falcons now have a powerful RB duo with Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr. for the 2026 season. Both will make up an exciting backfield. Robinson Jr. hopes that playing next to Bijan Robinson will give him better opportunities to achieve his goal of 1,000 yards in a season. With Bijan Robinson as the starting running back, Robinson Jr. will play an important role in supporting and adding competition at the position. Robinson Jr.'s goal is to achieve 1,000 yards in a season. He believes playing alongside Bijan Robinson will help him reach that goal. “With such a talented player like Bijan, I will learn a lot and be able to contribute more to the team.” Robinson Jr. shared. The 2026 season will be a big challenge for Robinson Jr., but he is determined to prove he deserves an important role on the Falcons’ roster. Playing alongside a talent like Bijan Robinson, Robinson Jr. hopes to showcase his skills and achieve personal success. Joining the Falcons is a fresh opportunity for Robinson Jr., where he can rebuild his career and achieve the goals he still has left to fulfill. Although his season with the 49ers was unsuccessful, Robinson Jr. still appreciates the experiences he had and thanks the 49ers for everything. With great determination, Robinson Jr. hopes the upcoming season will be his breakout year with the Atlanta Falcons. This is a crucial turning point in Robinson Jr.'s career as he finds a new environment to develop and reach significant accomplishments. With the support of a promising team like the Falcons, Robinson Jr. believes he will soon achieve the success he’s been waiting for.
