Green Bay, WI – April 11, 2026
The Green Bay Packers’ front office reportedly held an emergency late-night meeting Friday after receiving concerning news about one of their top cornerback targets.
According to multiple sources, Texas A&M cornerback Will Lee III — nicknamed “The Blanket” — made an unexpected pre-draft visit to the Washington Commanders just one day after visiting the Packers.
Lee III, who was widely believed to be a strong candidate for the Packers in the third or fourth round, has now become the center of a brewing draft-day battle between two NFC teams.
The Packers, who hosted Lee on Tuesday and were believed to have a strong mutual interest, were caught off guard by the Commanders’ aggressive pursuit. Sources say the team held an emergency strategy session lasting several hours late Friday night to discuss possible moves.
One person familiar with the situation told reporters:
“They were not expecting Washington to move this quickly. The Packers really like Lee. Now they have to decide whether to sit tight or adjust their draft board.”
Will Lee III is currently projected as a late third-round to early fourth-round prospect. He impressed at the NFL Combine with a 4.52-second 40-yard dash and a 9.39 Relative Athletic Score.
The Commanders, holding the No. 7 overall pick and the No. 71 pick in the third round, are said to be considering trading up within the third round to secure Lee before the Packers can select him at No. 52 or later.
This development has created sudden tension for the Packers, who are desperate to upgrade their secondary after a disappointing 2025 season in which their cornerbacks recorded only one interception.
With Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine both entering contract years, Green Bay views Lee III as a potential long-term solution on the perimeter.
Packers fans have already begun reacting strongly on social media, with many urging the front office to trade up if necessary to avoid losing the player they hosted just days ago.
As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, the battle for Will Lee III between the Packers and Commanders could become one of the more intriguing subplots of draft weekend.
The Packers are now faced with a difficult decision: trust their original board and risk losing Lee, or become more aggressive to secure the cornerback many in the organization believe fits their defensive scheme perfectly.
