"I CHOOSE DETROIT" – Lions' Veteran DT Stuns NFL by Accepting Minimum Deal to Return for Another Season Amid Trade Rumors
Detroit, Michigan – Amid a busy offseason filled with major contracts, Detroit Lions surprised everyone when defensive tackle (DT) DJ Reader decided to return to the team on a minimum deal after numerous trade rumors throughout the offseason. This decision has caught the attention of the entire NFL.
“I know I could have looked for more money elsewhere, but this team means a lot to me. I want another shot at it. Winning a second Super Bowl with Detroit is something I’m determined to help make happen,” Reader shared. He accepted a 1-year contract worth $1.145 million USD to return to the Lions, despite other offers.
Reader joined the Lions in 2025 and showed stability in his role as defensive tackle. He played in 16 games that season and received a solid Pro Football Focus rating of 68.5 from 134 qualified defensive tackles. Although the 2025 season did not end as expected, Reader still showed his capabilities.
“I’ve always felt Detroit is where I belong. Despite the challenges, I believe in the team’s ability, and I want to help them move forward in the pursuit of a championship,” Reader affirmed. After Roy Lopez left the team, Reader became the right choice for the Lions to strengthen their defensive line depth.
With fewer injuries in the upcoming season, Reader remains an important addition to the Lions’ long-term plans. He has accumulated 335 tackles, 5 sacks, and 2 interceptions throughout his career and continues to showcase solid defensive ability.
The Lions are preparing for the 2026 season, with high expectations in the NFC North. Retaining experienced players like Reader not only brings additional experience to the team but also helps solidify the defensive system, which requires reinforcement.
“I’m not just thinking about the money, I’m thinking about legacy and loyalty to Detroit,” Reader shared. His decision reassures Lions fans and fills them with pride about the team’s determination to retain valuable players.
