Former 6x Pro Bowl Star Returns "Home" to Sign One-Day Contract and Retire, Closing Out His Career in Steelers Colors
Pittsburgh, PA – Darius Slay, one of the best cornerbacks in NFL history, has decided to close out his legendary career by signing a one-day contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers to retire with the team. With 13 years in the NFL, Slay leaves behind an indelible legacy, particularly through his memorable seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.

Although Slay spent the final chapters of his career with the Steelers, he chose to end it where it all began. His decision to return "home" to officially end his football journey has moved Steelers fans, who have long followed his rise to stardom.
Slay joined the Steelers last season on a one-year, $10 million contract. However, he played just 12 games before being released as the team could not retain him. Despite this, Slay’s career remained impressive, tallying 28 interceptions, 163 pass deflections, and 655 tackles over the years.
He spent his first seven seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he made a name for himself. In 2017, Slay led the NFL with eight interceptions and earned All-Pro honors. Later, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles, winning a Super Bowl in 2024 and becoming a star with three Pro Bowl selections during his time there.
For Slay, finishing his career as a Steeler is a deeply meaningful moment—a way to honor the memories made in the NFL. His heart, no matter where he’s been, has always been with Pittsburgh, the place where his journey began.
“I’ve played for many teams and fought on many fields, but my heart has always belonged to Pittsburgh. No matter where I’ve been, I’ve always known this was my home. Today, I’m not just retiring, I’m coming back to where I began, where every game felt like it was a part of me.”
Slay completed 176 games of his 187-game career, leaving a mark with his strong defensive plays. While he didn’t secure another Super Bowl with the Steelers, he will always be remembered by fans as a symbol of perseverance, passion, and dedication.
With the accomplishments he’s amassed, Darius Slay has completed a remarkable career, cementing his place in NFL history as one of the finest cornerbacks of his generation.
