Green Bay, WI – April 10, 2026
The Green Bay Packers’ scouting department appears to have a strong interest in one particular cornerback prospect ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.
According to ESPN NFL Draft insider Matt Miller, several members of the Packers’ scouting staff are big fans of Chris Johnson, the cornerback from San Diego State.
This revelation comes as the Packers face significant needs in the secondary, especially with Keisean Nixon entering the final year of his contract.
In a recent ESPN draft article, reporter Rob Demovsky noted that new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon needs help at multiple positions, with cornerback being a top priority. Demovsky added that Packers GM Brian Gutekunst has a history of drafting multiple players at the same position in a single draft.
Miller echoed the cornerback discussion, stating: “The Packers have been widely connected to the second tier of corners in this class since the Senior Bowl. Chris Johnson, San Diego State has plenty of fans in the team's scouting department from what I've heard.”
Johnson, a 6-foot, 193-pound corner, posted an impressive Relative Athletic Score of 9.82 out of 10 and ran a 4.40-second 40-yard dash. His measurements (height, weight, and arm length) closely align with the historical draft preferences of the Packers at the cornerback position.
NFL analyst Lance Zierlein described Johnson as a “scheme versatile cornerback prospect” who can play both inside and outside. He praised Johnson’s disciplined technique, footwork, and ability to mirror receivers without relying on physicality.
With the Packers currently holding the No. 52 overall pick in the second round, Johnson — currently ranked around No. 42 overall on consensus boards — could potentially be available, though the team may need to trade up slightly if they are determined to select him.
The interest in Johnson comes at a critical time for Green Bay’s secondary. If Keisean Nixon departs after the 2026 season, the need for a reliable cornerback will become even more urgent.
Many Packers fans and analysts have long advocated for selecting a cornerback early in the draft to develop a long-term solution alongside or in place of Nixon.
While no official decision has been made, the positive feedback from the scouting department suggests Chris Johnson is firmly on Green Bay’s radar as they prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft.
