Dolphins HC Shocks Players With New Training Camp Rule — Veterans Immediately React

Posted Aug 17, 2026

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins entered training camp expecting a fresh start under first-year head coach Jeff Hafley, but few players anticipated the culture shock that awaited them on the opening morning.

Hafley has made it clear since arriving in Miami that the Dolphins are entering a new era built around toughness, accountability and competition rather than comfort. His first training camp has already featured a noticeably more physical approach than previous years, reflecting the identity he wants this team to embrace.

But according to multiple players inside the organization, Hafley introduced one additional rule before practice that immediately caught the entire locker room by surprise.

Beginning this week, every player who loses three consecutive one-on-one drills during practice must remain on the field after the scheduled session ends to complete an additional conditioning circuit in front of the entire team.

The rule applies equally to rookies, Pro Bowl veterans and team captains.

No exceptions.

The decision reportedly stunned several players when Hafley first announced it during the morning team meeting.

For years, many veterans had grown accustomed to individualized post-practice work, but making conditioning a public consequence for losing competitive drills represented a dramatic cultural shift.

The message was impossible to misunderstand.

Every rep now matters.

Coaches believe the new system will increase competitiveness throughout practice while eliminating any temptation for players to coast through individual periods.

Head coach Jeff Hafley shared his perspective with the entire team and received strong support.

“You can’t become a champion just by celebrating like a badass or bragging about how many years you’ve been playing.”

"Don't act like a championship team. Practice like a team that's hungry to become one."

Examining What Hafley Wants From His Team During Down Time

Several younger players admitted the announcement created additional pressure, but many also viewed it as an opportunity to prove themselves against established veterans.

Rather than avoiding difficult matchups, coaches have encouraged players to embrace them.

The Dolphins have already placed a greater emphasis on physicality and competitive periods throughout camp, with Hafley consistently stressing that effort and execution—not reputation—will determine playing time.

One veteran defensive player reportedly joked after the meeting that "nobody wants to be the guy still running when everyone else is heading to the locker room."

The laughter didn't last long.

Once practice began, the intensity noticeably increased.

Receivers fought harder through press coverage.

Defensive backs challenged every route.

Offensive and defensive linemen celebrated victories in one-on-one drills with an energy usually reserved for game days.

Assistant coaches repeatedly praised the increased urgency, noting that players competed through the final whistle rather than easing off late in practice.

For Hafley, however, the new rule has little to do with punishment.

Instead, it is designed to reinforce the competitive identity he believes the Dolphins must develop if they hope to return to postseason contention.

"Pressure creates habits," Hafley told players before dismissing the meeting. "If we compete like every rep matters in July, we'll compete like every snap matters in January."

Whether the rule remains throughout the season remains to be seen.

But inside the Dolphins' facility, one thing has already become clear.

Jeff Hafley didn't just change the practice schedule—he may have changed the entire culture of Miami football before Week 1 ever arrives.

Undrafted Dolphins Rookie Stuns Everyone After Dominating $100 Million NFL Superstar — One Training Camp Rep Has Miami Talking
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins entered training camp expecting their established stars and high draft picks to command most of the attention, but one undrafted rookie is suddenly forcing coaches to reconsider the depth chart. That player is defensive tackle Zeek Biggers, whose combination of size, power and relentless effort has quietly made him one of the most intriguing young players competing for a roster spot in Miami. Biggers arrived without the security that comes with being a high draft selection. For an undrafted player, almost every training camp rep can determine whether he survives the next round of roster decisions. But during a competitive team period, Biggers produced the kind of rep that immediately caught the attention of teammates standing along the sideline. Lined up across from veteran offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil, Biggers refused to give ground at the snap and turned what appeared to be a routine blocking rep into one of the most talked-about moments of practice. Tunsil is hardly an ordinary opponent. The veteran left tackle has spent years establishing himself among the NFL’s most recognizable offensive linemen and previously secured a contract extension worth approximately $100 million. Yet on this particular rep, reputation and salary meant very little. Biggers exploded forward at the snap, established leverage underneath Tunsil and drove through the veteran before disengaging and reaching the backfield. Several Dolphins players reacted immediately as Biggers finished the play, while members of the defensive unit celebrated what had just happened. For an undrafted rookie fighting simply to remain on an NFL roster, winning decisively against a player with Tunsil’s résumé represented far more than another successful practice rep. It was an opportunity to prove that Biggers belonged on the same field as established NFL talent. Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley has repeatedly emphasized that roster spots will be earned through consistency rather than reputation, and performances like this are exactly what can change a young player's standing during camp. “You notice when a young guy refuses to be intimidated,” Hafley said. “Zeek understands where he is and what he has to earn. Going against an established veteran and competing like that shows confidence, but now the challenge is doing it again and again. One rep gets attention. Consistency earns you a job.” That distinction could become extremely important for Biggers over the remainder of training camp. Miami's defensive front contains multiple players competing for limited opportunities, meaning an undrafted rookie cannot afford to disappear after producing one impressive highlight. Biggers must show that his strength can translate against different blocking styles while proving he can maintain gap discipline, defend the run and create interior pressure. Still, defeating a veteran of Tunsil's caliber provides exactly the kind of moment that can accelerate an overlooked player's rise. Tunsil's experience also makes the rep particularly valuable. Young defensive linemen rarely receive a better measuring stick than competing directly against a proven NFL offensive tackle. Inside the Dolphins organization, Biggers' performance has now given coaches another player worth watching closely as Miami approaches the most difficult roster decisions of the preseason. He entered camp as an undrafted player simply trying to get noticed. Now, after overpowering a $100 million NFL superstar in one unforgettable rep, Zeek Biggers may have given the Dolphins a reason to think twice before letting him go.
